Introduction

I have been using OpenOffice.org Impress exclusively and extensively for creating presentations for four years. I feel very comfortable with Impress and believe that it is as easy to use and as flexible as Microsoft PowerPoint.

However, unlike Microsoft PowerPoint, OpenOffice.org Impress does not come with a set of good templates. Even the ones coming with StarOffice are not polished enough. Therefore, I decided to design my own Impress templates and make them available to the public. Please note that these templates were originally designed to suit my own needs and preferences. You may need to modify them for them to be useful to suit your needs and preferences.

The templates

Below are some of my Impress templates, in both OpenDocument Presentation Template (otp) and StarOffice Presentation Template (sti) formats. You are welcomed to preview and download individual templates. If you want to download all templates in a single zip archive, please click on one of the following links:

Feel free to use or modify them under the terms and conditions of Creative Commons License. For templates using images from other sources (i.e., not taken by myself), you may also need to pay attention to the licenses of individual images.

Note. To edit the text on the title slide of some of the templates, you must switch to the master slide. In OpenOffice.org 2.0, select View -> Master -> Slide Master. In OpenOffice.org 1.1.x, select View -> Master -> Drawing.

Tokyo Midtown 1,2 and 3 (2009-09-01)

I visited Tokyo Midtown in summer 2008 and found it a very interesting place. So I used pictures taken there to make this set of templates.

The letterbox area has an aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Wide Screen, or Standard American Wide Screen, is one of the most common aspect ratios used in cinematography.

Wide Screen TV (2006-05-07)

The letterbox area of the "Wide Screen TV" template has an aspect ratio of 16:9, or 1.78:1. This is the standard aspect ratio of various HTDV formats. In addition, it is also the standard aspect ratio of most wide screen TV sets.

This set of four template (Wide Screen TV, Wide Screen, Panavison, and Cinemascope) are designed for making film-like presentations with OpenOffice.org Impress. Basically, I try to convey the film-like feel by letterboxing a content area with one of several "wide screen" aspect ratios.

This set of template shares a common mimimalist design, differs only in the aspect ratios of the letterbox area.

If your presentation has lots of images and you are willing to adjust the aspect ratio of most of your images to make them fit the templates nicely, you probably will find this set of templates useful. However, if your presentation consists of mainly text, or you are not used to editing images, you may want to use other templates instead.
